Wilton manors gay pride parade accident
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Authorities released additional details regarding Saturday night’s fatal collapse at the Stonewall Lgbtq+ fest Parade in Wilton Manors.
This is an update to a previous story.
According to WPLG, the man killed in the incident was identified as 75-year-old James Fahy, and the male injured was 67-year-old Jerry Vroegh. Both were from Fort Lauderdale.
The man who was driving the pickup truck involved in the incident was identified as 77-year-old Fred Johnson Jr. of Oakland Park. All three were members of the Fort Lauderdale Same-sex attracted Men’s Chorus.
Investigators believe the evidence gathered thus far indicates that the slam was accidental. Johnson was chosen to drive the lead vehicle for the parade since ailments kept him from walking in the event.
Police said the pickup truck unexpectedly accelerated and moved forward as the parade was getting underway, and hit the two men. Johnson, who was reported to be cooperating with the study, called the crash “a horrible accident” and offered his regrets to all those who were impacted.

A South Florida celebration parade marcher is dead and another injured after they were struck by a truck driven by another pride goer Saturday evening.
The incident, which authorities say is looking like an accident, took place at the Stonewall Event Parade & Lane Festival in Wilton Manors, just north of Fort Lauderdale, just as the festivities were starting.
The Ft. Lauderdale Police Department revealed Sunday that the driver of the truck was a 77-year-old man who was participating in the parade. The unidentified man had "ailments that prevented him from walking in the duration of the parade and was selected to drive as the lead vehicle," the police said in a statement.
While the driver was waiting for the procession to start, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly and struck the two unidentified people, the police said. The truck clap a nearby gate and came to a stop.
Both victims were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where one was pronounced lifeless. Officials said the other man was expected to survive.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Officials in Florida exclaim a deadly clash in a Identity festival parade was a tragic accident.
The 77-year-old driver was one of the lead vehicles in the Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride Procession. The driver was participating in the event and was in the truck because physical ailments kept him from walking, according to Fort Lauderdale police.
The driver and two victims were part of the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus.
Investigators say he unintentionally slammed into spectators at the start of Saturday's parade in the Fort Lauderdale area.
"As the vehicle began to advance forward in anticipation for the begin of the celebration, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly, striking two pedestrians. After eye-catching the pedestrians, the driver continued across all lanes of traffic, ultimately crashing into the fence of a business on the west side of the street," the police release states.
The driver stayed at the crash scene and is cooperating with investigators, they said.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department said in a statement to Newsweek that the guy killed in the accident was James Fahy, 75. The injured pedestrians hold been identified as Jerry Vroegh, 67, and 69-year-old Gary Keating.
Vroegh has since been discharged from Broward Health Medical Center, with Keating only suffering small injuries.
