Pride Month begins with celebrations across the world | Here's what to expect

Pride Month kicks off with events around the world starting this weekend.

It's an annual series of parades and other gatherings to honor LGBTQ+ culture and rights.

At its heart, Pride is both a party and a protest.

In the U.S. this year, that means speaking out against a slew of policies that impose restrictions on transgender people and that endeavor to end diversity, equity and inclusion programming in government, education and businesses.

Here's a look at the event's roots and this year's events and themes.

When Pride Month began

The monthlong global celebration began with Homosexual Pride Week in late June 1970, a year after the violent police raid at Modern York's Stonewall Inn, a gay bar.

At a time when many LGBTQ+ people kept their identities private, the June 28, 1969, raid sparked a series of public protests and catalyzed the gay rights movement.

The first pride week featured marches in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, and it has since grown to other cities. On the calendar are events in Philadelphia this weekend; New Orleans on June 14; Chicago on Jun

We encourage our traveling community to realize the laws and cultural challenges they may face in any destination they pick to visit for Pride and beyond. Don't be anxious of the planet, but always research information specific to your travels. Enjoy Pride, be observant, and look out for each other!

The LGBTQ+ rights movement has made tremendous strides over the past few decades and much of the progress in visibility is thanks in part to gay pride parades and marches that have taken place in cities around the world.

The global landscape for Homosexual rights, protections and acceptance varies tremendously by location, with some destinations attracting millions of visitors to their events like Madrid Homosexual Pride, Sao Paulo Gay Pride or San Francisco Male lover Pride, while more than 70 other countries have laws that allow discrimination or persecution of LGBTQ+ people.

LGBT Pride Month 2021: What to know about its history, events, parades

Every summer in the United States, the lesbian, gay, bisexual person and transgender community comes together for a monthlong celebration of love, diversity, acceptance and unashamed self-pride.

Here's everything you need to know about LGBT Event Month.

    What is LGBT Movement Month?

The month is meant to recognize the sweeping impact that LGBT individuals, advocates and allies hold on history in the United States and around the globe, according to the Library of Congress

    When is it?

LGBT Pride Month is celebrated every year in June.

The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.

The so-called Stonewall riots were a "tipping point" for the gay liberation movement in the Combined States, according to the Library of Congress. The uproar also paved the way for the contemporary fight for LGBT rights.

Previous U.S. presidents have, on several occasions, officially declared June as LGBT Celebration Month.
