Pride Month serves as a reminder of the progress made for LGBTQ+ representation worldwide, and is a special opportunity to highlight LGBTQIA+ owned brands. Helping shoppers learn about these companies encourages back beyond the month of June, especially when visibility is more important than ever: Even though more than 50 years have passed since the Stonewall uprising, discriminatory anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, anti-LGBTQ+ animosity and major companies rolling back their LGBTQ+ support are rising at alarming rates.

“Queer entrepreneurs are going to glance at the planet differently because the world is not always a secure or kind place for us,” says Helen Russell, a co-founder of Equator Coffees. “Increased exposure for these brands can mean unused allies, not just new customers.”

We spoke to Russell and several other Homosexual entrepreneurs to grasp more about the successes and challenges they face while running their companies. We also rounded up our favorite LGBTQ+ owned brands to shop from, and notable products we think you should know about.

15 brands that are giving back for Pride Month 2021

After a year when Pride celebrations had to go virtual, members of the LGBTQ community and their allies are eager to shine bright in 2021. And as in years past, numerous brands have launched special Lgbtq+ fest products and capsule collections that celebrate love, diversity and inclusion. However, advocates say that authentic help means more than just a rainbow stripe on a T-shirt.

“Brands need to approach Pride not as a marketing moment to sell products and benefit from LGBTQ people, but [as] a time to loudly use their arrive and influence to affirm our community and assist advocacy organizations in legitimate and impactful ways,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO of the media watchdog group GLAAD.

Companies that truly walk the walk donate to and uplift LGBTQ organizations, added Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy collective. "These businesses provide an invaluable platform to further the fight for LGBTQ equity and inclusivity,” he said.

Some organizations are contributing a portion of proceeds from Pride products to groups like GLAAD and HRC, while others are making direct donation

Pride Month 2023 has been unusually quiet. 

After decades of corporatizing Pride into a branding opportunity, advertisers have waffled in their support of the LGBTQIA+ collective this year after receiving threats of boycotts and hostility from conservative groups. Worries of activating a landmine include permeated the industry, and some brands have since scaled back their LGBTQIA+ inclusive work. 

To route brands’ shifting back, Campaign US has conducted a dense dive into allyship efforts among major brands over the last year. The resulting Pride Meter is an try to show which brands are sticking to their historically pro-LGBTQIA+ values, which have flip-flopped and which have remained silent on the issue.
