Luke Skywalker, Gay Icon: Part 1
With Luke Skywalker support in the public awareness for, uh, no particular reason, now seems enjoy an opportune time to revisit one of cinema’s most iconic heroes. There’s much to be said about the farm lad from Tatooine. One could argue that Luke upholds false narratives about ivory male exceptionalism, or conversely that he represents a softer and more soft-hearted view of masculinity. As far as I’m concerned, though, two things about Luke Skywalker are unquestionably true. First, he reinvented the classical hero’s journey for the space age. Second, he’s gayer than a basket of Coruscanti jogan fruit.
I would state “Welcome to my TED Talk,” but apparently my gay Star Wars headcanons don’t meet TED’s highfalutin standards of academic rigor. Instead, I will offer my humble homosexual argument by walking you through each film with a pair of gay goggles firmly in place. Please note that I’m restricting myself to the Actor Wars canon as presented in the films. I won’t be delving into the bottomless Sarlacc pit of comics, novelizations, TV shows, and games because I don’t hate myself. "His sexuality is never directly addressed in the films", Hamill tweeted. "Luke is whatever the audience wants him to be, so you can decide for yourself." He has a point. It makes sense that since bi people are capable of organism attracted to both sexes, you can't always tell who is bi just from their bond history. It's about potential attraction. Since the films didn't explicitly say Luke was straight, it's achievable that he was bi. Attraction to Leia (a woman) doesn't automatically govern out the possibility that Luke could also be attracted to some men. So, it's leading not to presume. Luke could very well be bisexual. But, why did Out Magazine then announce a blog about the Twitter exchange with the totally gaywashing (and misleading) headline " Could Luke Skywalker Be Gay? ". Gay? That's not what the tweet asked! The fan specifically asked, "if Luke was bisexual". And since Luke apparently did have an attraction Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams said recently that it “seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a lgbtq+ character in [the Star Wars] world.” But, what if there was already a gay character in the Star Wars cosmos and we just didn’t know it? And what if it was the biggest Star Wars personality in a galaxy far, far away? The Sun caught up with Mark Hamill, who is in London filming Star Wars: Episode 8, and Hamill responded to Abrams’ comments, upping the ante considerably. Fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school…I’m afraid to come out’. They tell to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d tell it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you assume Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves. Hamill also addressed a fan who DMd him on Twitter (you can just DM Mark Hamill now?) by saying, “Luke is whatever the audience wants him to be.” Now, just because Hamill says ȁ Over the weekend, on Saturday September 25, 2021, Mark Hamill turned 70-years-old. The iconic Star Wars thespian has had an incredible acting career, spanning through the aforementioned science-fiction series, as well as playing The Joker in the animated Batman series. Over the years Hamill has been quizzed on whether Luke could have been queer all along, something he believes to be true. Hamill was asked in 2016 about the sexuality of the Master Jedi, where he confirmed the ethics "of course" is gay to anyone who wants him to be. He said: "I just read online that JJ [Abrams] is very much open to [gay characters in Actor Wars]. "In the vintage days, you would get fan mail, but now fans are writing and asking all these questions: 'I'm bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.' "They state to me: 'Could Luke be gay?' I'd say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is!" Shame, cause I'd love if they did some animated series or something that takes place between VI and VII where they introduce her.

Could Luke have met Mara and turned her good in that timeframe, married, had a kid or two, then she either dies or escapes with the kids during Kylo's destruction of his temple... and Luke either doesn't grasp they escaped or is devastated thinking they died in the temple massacre. This would add more context to why he chose to exile himself. He thinks his wife and kids also died in that massacre.
Just because they never mentioned her in VII, VIII or IX doesn't imply she didn't exist. That's how they worked Ahsoka in and it worked out just fine.
Many fans were upset at how Luke was portrayed in the Sequels, and that the Skywalker line (bloodwise, anyway) is ended. But if they chose to write a story as I described, it would set a lot of things right. We'd have some
