What experts want you to know about having secure sex as a lgbtq+ woman
If you're a gender non-conforming woman, finding accurate sexual health information can be tricky.
You might have had a negative experience asking a GP, or simply not been given the right information at school.
These are both issues Dr Ruth McNair, a GP and LGBTQIA+ health researcher, and Lee Wang, from the LGBTQ Women's Health Program at ACON, acquire seen first-hand in their work.
We asked them to break down some ordinary questions from women who have sex with women.
And a heads up: Secure sex for you is going to depend on the kind of sex you're having, and who with — so if you're trans (more tips below!) or bisexual, you might have different considerations.
Do queer women have decrease rates of STI transmission?
Short answer: No.
"There's just a prevailing myth that women who have sex with women can't get STIs, which is just wrong. That's just not true," Ms Wang says.
Dr McNair says studies have establish homosexual women have about the same rates of STIs as heterosexual women.
However, she adds that "bi women have a higher rate than both of those groups".

How Do Lesbians Hold Sex? 28 Things to Know Before Your First Time
Often, people assume that lesbians can’t fetch pregnant, or that lesbian sex can’t result in pregnancy. That’s a myth based on the assumption that both women are cisgender.
If one significant other is transgender and has a penis and the other is cisgender and has a vagina, they can include penis-in-vagina sex.
In many cases, this means that pregnancy is possible.
If you want to shun pregnancy, talk to your partner about birth control.

I’m dedicating this newsletter to the topic of my PhD dissertation: Sex Therapy with Lesbians. My aim was to contribute awareness about how same-sex attracted women are unique in their needs for sex therapy and I mind you might be a little curious.
How Do Women Have Sex Together?
Historically, equal sex attracted women (queer, bisexual, lesbian) have been both fetishized and marginalized. Their sex is intriguing and yet often reflection of as “not valid sex.” Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s absolutely real. Sex is NOT always about a penis!! It can be but it certainly doesn’t have to be. Per a recent study, lesbians included the following in their definition of sex beyond penetration: oral sex, genital to genital touching, hand to genital touching, using sex toys, mutual masturbation and anal stimulation/penetration, with “the vast majority (85%) of participants considering any form of genital touching from one match to the other to constitute having sex” (Scott et al., 2017). This definition of sex helps everyone. It takes the pressure off penetration and off of orgasm existence the only goal.
