New adult lgbtq books
New Adult LGBTQ romance: a genre I would love to see so much more of. The first NA romcom I fell brain over heels in love with is once you may be familiar with. A little manual called Red, Pale and Royal Sky — heard of it? I was swept away by the humor and charm and loved seeing characters that were closer to my age (if not my existence experience — not remotely a royal here, just saying).
If you’re not familiar with the term new senior, it refers to the genre of books with characters at an age between YA and adult, thus: unused adult. The characters are typically in their 20s, sometimes in college, sometimes working, almost always trying to figure out how the heck to manage this thing called adulthood. It’s a highly relatable genre that has sometimes struggled to detect a place in publishing, but the unique experiences of readers that age makes it one I hope will continue to expand and find accomplishment in the future. And particularly when it comes to queer new senior, the intricacies of exploring and uncovering sexuality or gender identity, dating, and expressing your truest self, there is so much to explore in recent adult LGBTQ adoration stories.
And while it’s true that I w
Peregrine Seas by R.C. Ballad (July 1st)
Prince Peregrine couldn’t be happier to be kidnapped by pirates.
Peregrine wasn’t cut out for the restrictive life of a nobleman – he’s ravenous for adventure, prone to duelling, and his family refuse to believe he’s any kind of human at all. Despite his royal origins, he has more in common with the outcasts and rebels aboard the Cygnus that anyone onshore.
He just needs to convince the captain of that before his ransom’s paid.
Captain Alastar Macdara knows better than to trust an English prince. He has his hands full keeping his ragged crew together, and the last thing he needs is to be burdened with some foppish dandy—however charming. This particular hostage is more trouble than Alastar planned for: used to getting his hold way, as stubborn as Alastar and not nervous to tell him when he’s wrong. But Alastar knows a thing or two about being an outcast, and his honourable streak refuses to authorize him send Peregrine support to a life of misery.
The ransom might be off, but that doesn’t mean Peregrine is part of the crew. Now he must prove he’s courageous and quick-witted enough to earn his place on the Cygnus before Alastar d

Mothers and Sons by Adam Haslett (January 7th)
At forty, Peter, an asylum lawyer in New York City, is overworked and isolated. He spends his days immersed in the struggles of immigrants only to return to an empty apartment and occasional hook-ups with a male who wants more than Peter can give. But when the asylum case of a young same-sex attracted man pierces Peter’s numbness, the event that he has avoided for twenty years returns to haunt him.
Ann, his mother, who runs a women’s retreat center she founded after leaving his father, is wounded by the estrangement from Peter but cherishes the world she has built. She long ago banished from her thought the decision that divided her from her son. But as Peter’s case plunges him further into the fraught memory of his first love and the night of force that changed his experience forever, he and his mother must confront the secret that tore them apart.

It seems impossible that Blake’s only been publishing adult F/F romance for a year, with both Delilah Green Doesn’t Care and Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail quickly becoming gender non-conforming romance staples. Here Blake rounds out the trio with Iris finally taking center stage, drowning in her singlehood while everyone else in her existence thrives on idealistic bliss. It’s almost cruel that Iris has an astonishing new career writing romance novels, of all things. But when second novel syndrome hits her hard after realizing she used up all her love-related energy on her debut, she auditions for a local play…and ends up face-to-face with a recent awful one-night stand, Stevie. To make matters weirder, Stevie asks Iris to pretend to be her girlfriend, and Iris, desperate for some love-related inspiration, agrees. But now that things are finally clicking between them, can they turn it into something real?
