Lgbtq suiting
Whether you wear them every day or only tolerate wearing them for extraordinary occasions (weddings, job interviews, awards ceremonies, graduations, cocktail parties), a good suit is a staple of any wardrobe. The difficulty is that suits can be very, VERY high-priced, especially if you desire one that is properly tailored and doesn’t look…well…cheap.
I have always been an advocate of thrifting for suits. I live in a part of NYC known for being a hub of thrift stores in a wealthy neighborhood. That’s not a unpretentious brag – my apartment is rent stabilized. BUT, my wealthy neighbors are always dropping off their Chanel shirts and Hilfiger suits at these local thrift stores, at which you can purchase affordable, beautiful items and then use the rest of your shopping budget to have your thrifted apparel tailored. If you’ve show up to terms with tailoring, just remember this: When purchasing an article of clothing that you design to get tailored, be sure that it fits the largest portions of your body and receive any excess material taken in. It is easier for a tailor to remove and take-in fabric than it is to add fabric or “let-out.”

Okay, let’s be authentic. Up until recently, good suits were not made for people with curves. And definitely not LGBTQ+ wedding suites–tailored, amazing suits you could feel appreciate a rock luminary in. Even support before I was planning a wedding, I remember having such a rigid time finding off the rack button up shirts, suit jackets or pants that fit the way I wanted them to. I didn’t even desire to wear suits all the day, but I wanted a good professional one to wear to interviews and work. And it was a pain!
The jacket sleeves were too short. I couldn’t lift my arms above my head. The pants were too extended and too spacious. The pants were too high waisted. My boobs were too big and the shirt stretched in all the wrong places.
C’mon, why was it so hard to identify a suit that I loved that loved my body as well!?
Even 10 years ago when I was planning my wedding I remember learning that there was ONE store in the San Francisco Bay area that specialized in suits and button downs for the LGBTQ+ group. ONE. C’mon.
These days I’m so elated that the wants and needs of our community acquire been heard! There are some fantastic companies out there that are tailoring their clothes (see what I did there?)

We know we harp on about how important it is to ‘be you’ on your wedding time, but for some women who want to rock a wedding suit or a tuxedo, options can be a little sparse, and for others, it can be a downright awkward experience – and that’s not okay with us.
In the past, wedding suits were designed for men, which meant that finding an incredible suit that fit a woman’s, or nonbinary person’s, body (and often their curves) just wasn’t an option – and if it were, it had to be something custom-made. Unlearn getting an off-the-rack shirt, jacket, or pants.
But, that’s not the case anymore. More and more businesses that cater specifically to the LGBTQ+ community are popping up. Fitting suits to androgynous styles, respecting the process of having a custom-fitted garment made for people with transitioned bodies and experiences, and helping women find their perfect wedding tux are things they often specialize in.
