Pete Buttigieg, more commonly known as "Mayor Pete," announced his presidential exploratory committee on Jan. 23, 2019, and followed up with an official campaign launch on April 14, 2019. Buttigieg, who came out as he was pursuing his second term as mayor of his hometown, is hoping to become the nation's first openly queer presidential nominee of a major party.
Out of the running: Saying that "the path has narrowed to a close," Buttigieg announced Sunday night that he is suspending his 2020 presidential campaign. Pete Buttigieg is exactly who US political reporters want to write about.
He is not Donald Trump, for one thing. Nor is he Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren.
One of a bloated (and still swelling) field of democratic 2020 contenders, Mr Buttigieg proposals bored journalists a fresh face and a fresh name.
Yet there's more to his narrative.
If Mr Buttigieg was to be elected, he'd be the first to go from mayor to president — and the Mayor of a town roughly the size of Ballarat to boot.
He would be the youngest president and the first millennial, stepping into the office at age 39.
He'd be the first openly gay president.
Oh, and did we mention he's also the underdog? Or at least he was. The media's fascination with Mr Buttigieg has, in change, fuelled support for his candidacy.
He went from polling at less than 1 per cent in February to hovering around 10 per cent in slow April.
For reference, Joe Biden has consistently held the top spot around 29 per cent. Two mention polls have seen Mr Buttigieg creep up into third.

An improbable rise

Pete Buttigieg drops out of Democratic race for Alabaster House
The 38-year-old became the first openly gay presidential candidate from a major party when he announced he was running for the Democratic nomination.
But despite a successful start, his campaign lost momentum in recent weeks.
His decision to drop out comes ahead of a key morning on Tuesday in the Democratic race to grab on Trump.
Fourteen states will vote on Super Tuesday, by the terminate of which staunch left-winger Bernie Sanders could acquire an unbeatable lead and be a step closer to the nomination.
His departure leaves six Democrats still in the running - Joe Biden, Mr Sanders, Michael Bloomberg, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Tulsi Gabbard.
Speaking to supporters in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana, Mr Buttigieg stressed the values he said his campaign had hoped to promote.
"And so we must recognise that at this point in the race, the top way to keep faith with those goals and ideals is to step aside and help deliver our party and our nation together," he said. "So tonight I am making the difficult conclusion to suspend my campaign for the presidency."

Millennial mayor Pete Buttigieg has formally launched a bid to become the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, after a rapid rise from obscure Midwestern politician to top-tier contender.
The 37-year-old is the youngest entrant - after 77-year old Bernie Sanders and 69-year-old Elizabeth Warren also launched their campaigns - and is also the first openly gay major presidential candidate.
He has been mayor of South Bend, Indiana, since 2012 and was credited for turning round the industrial town's struggling economy.
He told crowds at his launch event in the town: "I recognise the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor.
"More than a little bold - at age 37 - to search the highest office in the land."
Polls in Iowa and New Hampshire last week put Buttigieg in third place in both states, behind Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.
In the first quarter of this year, he raised $7m (£5.3m) - which outstripped more established rival US Senator Elizabeth Warren.
