Programming Pride: 10 LGBTQI+ Pioneers of Computer Science

In honor of Same-sex attracted Pride and the anniversary of Stonewall, we‘re highlighting a group of pioneers of computer science: people who were (or are) woman loving woman, gay, bisexual, or transgender. As it turns out, there are many LGBTQI+ pioneers beyond Alan Turing and Apple CEO Tim Fry. The 10 LGBTQI+ people profiled here are individuals whose life work and discoveries have played an integral role in the maturation of modern notebook technology.

Of course, many of these individuals lived and worked in an era when social pressures (and even laws) required them to hide their accurate orientation or identity—which makes it all the more fitting that we commemorate them today. We’ve listed them chronologically by birthdate.

Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-1891): Russian mathematician

Born in Moscow, Sofia Kovalevskaya was the first major Russian female mathematician, the first woman to work as an editor for a scientific journal, and a contributor to the development of the Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem. Women at that time were not allowed to formally attend university, but Kovalevskaya was allowed to audit mathematics classes at the University of He

Abstracts

Ghettos are marginal territories, in which ethnic, religious, social and sexual minorities were encapsulated and segregated throughout History. Crossed by flows and tensions on movement in the global landscape, such spaces should be reanalyzed under a global perspective. Aiming to convey on marginal territories of gender linked to LGBT sports events, this article has tried to re-think the concept of the ghetto from the "Chicago School", and analyze it according to new lenses, applied to two global and specific LGBT earth championships (Gay Games and World OutGames). It was noticed that the occurrence of them and the expectations around "possibilities of ejaculation" of bodies, genders, sexualities, and desires, associated to the sports' nature itself, open up the perspective that such events will perform a thoughtful of "sexualized ghettos", i.e., territorialized spaces from sexual desires' pract

Esports personality and professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive commentator Duncan "Thorin" Shields has come under fire for defending recently banned streamer m0e's use of the word "f----t." m0e has routinely used the synonyms on stream for years without any backlash from Twitch, until receiving a 30-day ban this week. "It's not a lousy word and has a lot of meanings," m0e said in a viral clip posted earlier this week, where he defends his use of the word as a way to express his frustrations.

In a tweet from Sunday, Thorin claims the synonyms m0e used "is not and has never been explicitly or solely homophobic in meaning." In a long thread, Thorin lists some of the meanings the term held in the past and says "but the tyrants who try to tell you a word only has the meaning they decided, even if they're making it up on the spot or ignoring cultural context and history, can still fuck off."

Thorin is currently on the analyst desk at ESL One Cologne, a major CS:GO tournament being streamed to <s>hundreds of thousands of fans on Facebook. The analyst has worked with ESL (formerly called the Electronic Sports League) before, but is a contractor and not a full-time employee.
