Started in 1997, Taboo is now at Duxton, no longer at Neil Road. It’s a small space compared to the former 2-level premise. Due to COVID restrictions, the club is transformed into a cafe now.
Not sure if they will ever go back to being a club since the space is petty. I guess even if restrictions are lifted, it will more likely be changed into a bar.
For lunch, Taboo collaborates with home business, Haoke, serving Hakka food. For dinner, the cafe collaborates with private dining f’ve which provides Indonesian and Peranakan cuisine.
A pair of rainbow wings is placed at the entrance. How many gay boys have posed with it?
Although the diet is rather carby, and gay men have avoided carbs since 1980s, I thought the collaborations are interesting. Interesting because they serve Asian food that belong to our Singaporean heritage. #asianpride
And also because they are quite affordable. A set meal for lunch costs $12.90 and dinner at about $25. I love their affordability, please don’t increase the prices.
Since my sister (real sister, not “sister”) and I are Hakka, we went for lunch.

Was reluctant to visit The Populus Cafe at Neil Road. Don’t want to chase another hipster cafe. But Pinky Piggu wanted to go. Ok lor. When we were there, half of the popular cafe was packed with gay boys and butches; that’s always an auspicious sign. Male lover people are purveyors of good taste, right? (Positive stereotypes are ok for minority groups, right?)
You can tell from the decor that Populus is unlike. Not those commonplace industrial cement stuff, but a chic contemporary look.
The menu too reflects a difference in outlook from other cafes. Strangely, half of the food we had that day have Indian spices. The spring pancake and fried chicken ($21, above) has a yogurt-like and delectable housemade ranch dressing, and the chicken itself seemed to be seasoned with a hint of Indian spice (clove?). A dish well received by us trio.
The other dish we liked is the beef ragu pappardelle ($18). Although the pasta is brittle, the spiced tomato sauce (curry?) gives an excitement to the dish.
Buckwheat pancake ($18.50) is not something I’d request but it is agreeable, I suppose. Nice
Been there, done that? Assess again, my friend.

You can’t miss this block with the rainbow flag noticeably perched above its entrance. Regulars come here for the strong Extended Island Iced Teas (à la sister bar, Tantric's), double-shot drinks and also for the kitsch paraphernalia of NSFW, semi-nude male pictures and musical-theatre posters that lined the walls.
