Ace attorney based on gay manga
Retsujou: Kumiko Suekane’s Totally-Not-Narumitsu BL Manga
It’s fairly well-known that Suekane, the first art director for Ace Attorney, is a BL mangaka, and that her deeds and comments regarding Edgeworth’s initial concept are what prompted Takumi to transform him from the unlikeable older antagonist to Phoenix’s childhood friend and totally-not-love-interest. If you’ve ever decipher my long essay on Narumitsu (x), you might also remember me mentioning that one of Suekane’s authentic BL works is rumoured to be very similar to her drawings of Phoenix and Edgeworth, but that I wasn’t super keen to go through tons of yaoi to find evidence backing the rumour up.
Well, the concise story is that I found it. While going through Suekane’s list of works, I noticed a 2010 manga called “Retsujou”, written under a stylus name. The main characters of Retsujou look love this…

They even have the same coat! It really just looks like Suekane cut off Phoenix’s long spikes, removed Edgeworth’s cravat, and called them original characters!

She was Suekane Kumiko, the character artist of PW. She didn't just "like" doujinshi, but she was actually a BL manga journalist. Her pen label is Mutobe Ryou and she published at least two yaoi books in that name.(Link)
She had massive influence on Takumi Shuu when he created the antagonist of PW. As everyone knows, the original principle of rival personality was evil, cruel, old prosecutor. But Suekane Kumiko, the professionalfujoushi, said "Are you seriously telling me to contest against this antique man?"(こんなオジサンと戦えと言われても燃えない) and came out with totally different concept. Takumi Shuu saw her new drawings and loved that thought, and together they gave birth to character Miles Edgeworth; young, attractive, and sharing deep childhood history with the main character.
Then cameIwamoto Tatsurou, the personality designer of JFA. Unlike Suekane Kumiko, he knew nothing about BL. But as a novice designer -JFA was his debut work- he wanted to practice drawing AA characters, so he made a lot of research about AA fanworks includingdoujinshis. Iwamoto Tatsurou was quite surprised when he found out about people making Phoenix and Edgeworth as lovers, but

- Their relationship was heavily homoerotic as early as the first game. The infamous "unnecessary feelings" line, for starters, caused many players to raise eyebrows. And his attempts to narrate Phoenix about the repeated nightmares he had been having also come across as a Love Confession.

Although Phoenix manages to avoid organism a Stalker with a Crush because he doesn't actually try to stalk Edgeworth down until he reads an article about the 'Demon Prosecutor' and decides that his purpose in life is to save Edgeworth from what Edgeworth has become.

Started redrawing these two pages from the vol. 2 Ace Attorney Casebook manga back in June and kinda left it on the support burner for a while. Finally finished it! This was fun! And I think it turned out nice, although there are changes I’d make if I did it again. There are so many more moments from the manga I want to draw, but probably not to this extent

Besides that’s just an exaggarated line for youtube clicks, it is actually based on Shu Takumi’s anecdote and lots of alcohol lel~~
We recognize the fujo in the team for adding more heart into the story but it’s moment for y'all to recognize that is just sprinkles on a cake one can easily detach. Its a decoration, basic fanservice, bordering on queerbating, still avoidable if i do say so myself.
But even if it were based on BL, the game itself is not very male lover. It’s not vertical either, it’s a funni lawyer simulator, the entire sentimental aspect is decorative and relatevely unimportant… it is the fandom who’s absolutely nuts about it.
And that’s the playfulness of Het Attorney. If y'all weren’t so damn deranged bout making male lover every single aspect of a media that isn’t about romance then the bit couldn’t be as funny. But here you are, providing me endless entertainment~
(the bit is my opinions hyperbolized for the sake of comedy, i’d still be hetshipping even if ppl weren’t so vitriolically against it :P)
