Gay marriage is between a man and a woman
The Journey to Marriage Equality in the United States
The road to nationwide marriage equality was a drawn-out one, spanning decades of United States history and culminating in victory in June 2015. Throughout the long clash for marriage equality, HRC was at the forefront.

From gathering supporters in small towns across the territory to rallying in front of the Supreme Court of the United States, we gave our all to assure every person, regardless of whom they love, is known equally under the law.
A Growing Contact for Equality
Efforts to legalize same-sex marriage began to pop up across the country in the 1990s, and with it challenges on the state and national levels. Civil unions for queer couples existed in many states but created a separate but equal typical. At the federal level, couples were denied access to more than 1,100 federal rights and responsibilities associated with the institution, as well as those denied by their given state. The Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law in 1996 and defined marriage by the federal government as between a dude and woman, thereby allowing states to deny marriage equality.
New Century &
Same-Sex Marriage
Legal proceedings and legislative action in a number of countries have given civil recognition to queer marriage relationships, and the question of same-sex marriage continues to be widely debated. As we confront this and other issues, we encourage all to bear in mind our Heavenly Father’s purposes in creating the earth and providing for our mortal birth and experience here as His children. “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”Marriage between a man and a woman was instituted by God and is main to His plan for His children and for the well-being of culture. Strong families, guided by a loving mother and father, serve as the fundamental institution for nurturing children, instilling faith, and transmitting to future generations the moral strengths and values that are essential to civilization and vital to eternal salvation.
Changes in the civil law accomplish not—indeed, cannot—chan
Same-sex marriage, which the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015 legalized nationwide in the case known as Obergefell v. Hodges, is facing resurgent hostility.
In the decade since the court’s decision, widespread support for homosexual marriage has increased. Currently, about 70% ofAmericans approve of legally recognizing the marriages of gay couples, a 10-percentage-point bump from 2015.
Obergefell led to an increase in marriages among same-sex partners, with more than 700,000 same-sex couples currently married.
Despite this, Republican lawmakers in five states own recently introduced symbolic bills calling on the Supreme Court to overturn its ruling in Obergefell.
And Republican lawmakers in two states have proposed legislation that creates a new category of marriage, called “covenant marriage,” that is reserved for one man and one woman.
As a professor of legal studies, I have faith such attacks on same-sex marriage portray a serious threat to the institution.
And others share my concern.
A 2024 poll of married queer couples found that 54% of respondents are worried that the Supreme Court might overturn Obergefell, with only 17% saying they did not anticipate such a challe

Abstract
Laymen in general associate natural regulation theories to conservative moral conceptions, like traditional marriage of a man and a woman. That makes sense when we detect Catholic Church's position about matrimony or even academic marriage conceptions as the one claimed by John Finnis. But would be possible to defend the so called “marriage equality” in natural law grounds? This paper aims to answer this question affirmatively. Departing from a critical analysis of Finnis’ spontaneous law theory and his marriage conception, I discuss that a better matrimony conception needs to be grounded on a expansive vision of human sexuality, which encompasses lesbian and gay couples. Instead of procreation (which is one of the marriage points in Finnis’ conception), human experience shows that sex is not limited to breeding - it is a way people can achieve pleasure and upper levels of intimacy, rega
The 10 Dumbest Things Ever Said About Same-Sex Marriage
America will finally allow many more gays and lesbians a fair shake at this whole institution of marriage thing, now that the Supreme Court has ruled to strike down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), as well as declining to resuscitate California’s anti-gay Proposition 8. Let’s celebrate these hard-won victories by revisiting 10 of the most absurdly dumb and homophobic remarks about marriage equality from politicians, activists, celebrities and religious figures over the years.
1. “I ponder gay marriage should be between a man and a woman.”
These are confusing words from anyone, but perhaps especially from former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who made this puzzling remark in 2003. He has since claimed he performed two gay marriages while in office. With the fall of Proposition 8, California can now get back to the business of marrying gays, Schwarzenegger’s muddled thoughts aside.
2. Marriage equality is “a threat to the nation’s survival in the drawn-out run.”
