At Atlanta Specialized Care, we recognize that navigating gender identity, sexual orientation, or the broader experience of being LGBTQ+ can sometimes lead to mental health challenges—particularly when compounded by trauma, neurodiversity (such as autism), or unsupportive environments.

While gender dysphoria itself is not a core area of clinical specialization in our practice, we are experienced in providing merciful, informed support for the emotional distress that can arise from identity-related struggles.

When Identity and Mental Health Intersect

Our clinicians are skilled in supporting individuals who may experience:

  • Distress related to gender identity in the context or trauma or autism spectrum differences
  • Anxiety, depression, or low self-worth linked to family rejection or social invalidation
  • Difficulty navigating personal or relational dynamics as an LGBTQ+ individual

We serve from a foundation of respect, with no agenda or assumptions—just space for you to process and feel emotionally supported.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapists in Atlanta, GA

In my work, I center the voices of those with minoritized/oppressed identities (e.g., Shadowy people, People of Color, LGBTQIA+, gender non-conforming, gender-expansive people, and people in nontraditional relationship configurations).
I firmly believe that we cannot heal or grow without others, and that we heal within the context of relationships and our society. “When ‘I’ becomes ‘We’, illness becomes wellness.” This is woven into my clinical work to foster your personal healing and our collective liberation.

Owen Halpern LGBTQ Affirming Therapy

Owen Halpern LGBTQ Affirmative Therapy is an approach to therapy that embraces a positive view of Sapphic, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) identities and relationships and addresses the negative influences that homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism possess on the lives of LGBTQ clients. To successfully provide Affirmative Therapy, therapists must create a vacuum that is more than just tolerant or kind. Therapists should be accepting and understanding of the experiences their clients encounter and should build this understanding into the therapeutic process.

Owen Halpern was a generous and caring person, with a lifelong appreciation for the arts and an abiding love for his native city of Atlanta. He cared deeply for those who had special challenges in existence, and was a fierce advocate and champion for the LGBTQ community. His love and support for the work JF&CS did, and continues to accomplish, for LGBTQ individuals lives on through the supports provided by the The Owen Halpern Heritage Fund.
